Every day, drivers travel millions of miles on the
5-County region's roadway system, thousands
use the region's transi services and bicycle
facilities, and millions of dollars of goods move
through the transportation network. Even with the
2010-2020 T-WORKS transportation program, funding
for transportation infrastructure and services cannot
address all of the traffic safety and
operational issues. The Kansas
Department of Transportation (KDOT), the
Mid-America Regional Council (MARC)
and the Lawrence-Douglas County
Metropolitan Planning Organization
(L-DC MPO) have completed a two
phase study to assess the changing
transportation needs in Douglas,
Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami, and
This comprehensive study involved residents,
community leaders, and transportation stakeholders.
The Study resulted in a set of recommended
strategies to improve the region's transportation
system through the year 2040.
Purpose of the StudyThe purpose of the 5-County Regional Transportation Study
was to assess the changing transportation needs of the region and identify key
strategies to enhance the regional transportation system in a sustainable way.
Difficult choices will need to be made, and this study will serve as a guide and
help to shape the future transportation system for the region.
Why is the Study needed?The 5-County region is the fastest growing region in the State of Kansas.
Rapid development in the study region will strain the transportation
infrastructure needed to support additional growth. A number of high-impact
developments are underway or planned in the region that will significantly
impact regional travel patterns. Examples include BNSF Intermodal facility in
Edgerton and additional growth at Village West in Kansas City, KS.
